ECHO صدى​

ECHO صدى​ is a multimedia performance in which the artist and collector Ossama Helmy–Oz Oz weaves together a diverse sound archive from old home recordings and music to fragments of spoken stories. On stage, Oz Oz takes on the role of a DJ, yet instead of mixing tracks, he blends his personal narratives with voice messages from a husband to his deceased wife, recorded on reel-to-reel tapes from the 1970s.

He interweaves feelings, thoughts, sounds, and effects, crafting a new sonic narrative through the use of analog audio devices, building an entirely new sound tape and manually creating sound effects, rather than relying on musical instruments or digital production tools. In this performance, Oz Oz questions the metaphorical meanings of sound effects — such as Echo, Delay, Reverb, Looper, distortion, and the speed or slowness of the tape — through a journey that also explores his relationship with death and loss.

​Ossama Helmy - OzOz is a multidisciplinary Egyptian artist and collector, a theater actor and storyteller who initially worked in the field of Music as a singer. He studied anthropology and founded the Arab Origami Center, through which he integrates origami with education, theater, visual arts, animation, and dance. OzOz established the Audioz Archive, which features a wide and diverse collection of music, archival materials, and home recordings, all accessible to artists and researchers via analog playback devices. Using these collections, OzOz creates a unique and interactive artistic experience that ranges from performing arts and lecture performances to exhibitions, listening Events, and podcasts.
