Die Gesprächsreihe CIVIC CITY, die auch live als Podcast und Videostream übertragen wird, bringt Künstler:innen, Urbanist:innen, Denker:innen und Organisator:innen in Unterhaltungen zusammen, um aktuelle und zukünftige Formen des Zusammenlebens, der Arbeit und der Beteiligung in Berlin zu diskutieren, zu untersuchen und neue Formen zu imaginieren.


Wie sieht Teilhabe und Partizipation in einer Stadt wie Berlin aus? Ist es ständiges Abstimmen in Volksentscheiden oder Referenden, bekommen Bürger:innen Gelegenheit, sich in Planungsprozesse einzubringen? Wie entwickeln wir Alternativ-Entwürfe inmitten einer Flut von fragmentarischen Informationen und Impulsen, die unsere Alltage füllen? Wo finden wir in diesem täglichen Ansturm, nachdem die Fake News gefiltert sind, noch Plätze, in denen eine offene Diskussion möglich ist? Ist es möglich, Teilhabe, Familie und Beruf zu vereinen? Wie beteiligen sich Menschen, die Teil dieser Gesellschaft sind, aber über keine deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit verfügen?


In einer Reihe von fünf Gesprächen möchten wir öffentliche Räume der gegenseitigen Bereicherung schaffen, die Momente der gemeinsamen Reflektion und Vorstellung erlauben. Moderiert von Fetewei Tarekegn, einem Moderator, Künstler und urbanen Gärtner, der in seiner Sendung Minority Report regelmäßig Gäste zu kritischen Unterhaltungen über ihre Erfahrungen als Teil von Minderheiten einlädt und am Community Campus Dammweg einen Gemeinschaftsgarten mitbetreibt.

Die fünfte und letzte Folge, Nutzung / Zukunft / KI / Chance, befasst sich mit der Zukunft der Arbeit und dem Aufkommen der KI-gestützten Entscheidungsfindung. Sie untersucht die Chancen und Herausforderungen, die sich aus diesem technologischen Fortschritt ergeben, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die gesellschaftliche Ungleichheit und die Entwicklung von integrativen Arbeitsformen (Holocracy/Teal Model).

The fifth and final episode, Use / Future / AI / Opportunity, delves into the future of human labor and the advent of AI-assisted decision-making. It explores the opportunities and challenges that arise from this technological advancement, especially in terms of societal inequality and the development of inclusive modes of labor. The episode also raises questions about the potential job losses, the effects on migrant labor and cultural work, its impact on urban settings and cohabitation, and the value of common experiences in a world where AI standardization is prevalent.

Biografien Gäste: 

Born in Damascus, Syria, Sulafa Hijazi is a Director, visual and Multimedia artist Based in Berlin-Germany.                                                    

She studied at the Higher Institute of the dramatic arts in Syria where she majored in dramatic studies, and at the Städelschule Fine Art Academy in Frankfurt Am Main, Germany.                               

Hijazi began her career as a writer and director of animation and other multimedia production, with a particular focus on children education, social development.

Her animation and multimedia productions are very papular among Arab children and youth. They have been shown on many TV channels and online platforms. They have also featured in national and international festivals, receiving several awards. Among them the golden/best animation award in Hollywood, Russia, India, Cairo and Iran for her feature animation film The Jasmine Birds 2009.

Hijazi was a founding member of Spacetoon 'the first free Arabic satellite channel for kids' and a board member of CIFEJ International Center of Films for Children and Young People from 2012 till 2017.

At the beginning of 2010 she established Bluedar, a digital art production house, started between Damascus and Beirut and located now in Berlin-Germany. www.bluedar.net       

In 2011 Hijazi was involved in the peaceful resistance's movement of the Syrian revolution, and was creating and publishing digital artworks that criticize the political and social oppression.

Due to the diminishing freedom of expression in Syria, Hijazi flew to Frankfurt in 2013 where she studied contemporary art and started to experiment with a variety of conceptual art and multimedia forms.

Her artworks have been exhibited in several galleries in Europe and featured in on-line platforms, newspapers, and books. Her artworks are now part of acclaimed art collections such as the British Museum in London, Barjeell Art Foundation in Sharjah, and International Media Support (IMS) in Copenhagen.

Katalin Gennburg 
Ich bin eine Berlinerin und Zugezogene, wie so viele Menschen hier. Für mein Studium an der Technischen Universität kam ich in diese Stadt, und habe heute einen Abschluss in Philosophie (B.A.) und Historischer Urbanistik (M.A.). Mit meiner Familie lebe ich im grünen Norden von Treptow. Die Frage, wie Städte sich verändern beschäftigt mich, seit ich aus einer schrumpfenden Stadt im Osten in den Berliner Speckgürtel zog. 1984 geboren, erlebte ich die Wende als Kind. Dass etliche Menschen arbeitslos wurden und Freunde mit ihren Eltern der Arbeit hinterher zogen, hat mich stark geprägt. Mit dem Beginn des Irak-Krieges fing ich an mich politisch zu engagieren. 2002 wurde ich in die Stadtverordnetenversammlung in Falkensee gewählt und dort als jüngste Abgeordnete nicht nur stellvertretende Vorsitzende der Stadtvertretung im Rathaus sondern auch zuständig für die Arbeit an einem neuen Stadtentwicklungsplan für die rasant wachsende Umlandgemeinde. Hier lernte ich von der Pike auf, welche Stadtplanungsinstrumente es gibt, wie wichtig Bodenpolitik und Eigentum an Grund und Boden für eine strategische und gemeinwohlorientierte Stadtentwicklung ist und wie Bodenspekulation sich räumlich darstellt. Das veranlasste mich letztlich auch zum Thema meiner Masterarbeit im Fach Historische Urbanistik, die ich zwölf Jahre später einreichte und zwar zum Thema „Die Materialität des Speckgürtels. Zur Bodenprivatisierung in Ostdeutschland seit 1990 – Die Berliner Umlandgemeinde Falkensee und die Errichtung der Herlitzwerke“. Nach dem Studium trafen sich die Wege von mir und der heutigen Senatorin für Stadtentwicklung in Berlin, Katrin Lompscher, und ich wurde ihre Wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin. In dieser Zeit übernahm ich auch die Funktion als Sprecherin der Landesarbeitsgemeinschaft Städtebau- und Wohnungspolitik der Berliner Linkspartei für zwei Jahre. Schließlich kandidierte ich als Direktkandidatin im Wahlkreis 1 in Treptow-Köpenick, einem eigentlich aussichtslosen Wahlkreis für die LINKE in Berlin. Es war die Zeit als Bernie Sanders in Amerika und Jeremy Corbyn in England für Wirbel sorgten, weil sie ihre Parteien und die Wahlkämpfe mit Graswurzelaktivismus und basisorganisierten Kampagnen in Aufruhr versetzten und damit erfolgreich waren. Inmitten einer Gruppe von Leuten, die allesamt Lust auf Politisierung und Wahlkampf jenseits von Parolen hatten, kämpfte ich um das Direktmandat und gewann überraschend den Wahlkreis Alt-Treptow, Plänterwald, Baumschulenweg und Nord-Niederschöneweide. Seit September 2016 bin ich in der Abgeordnetenhausfraktion der LINKEN Sprecherin für Stadtentwicklung, Tourismus und Smart City und demnach mit Fragen der wachsenden Stadt Berlin und Fragen zur Stadt der Zukunft befasst. Ich streite für eine Stadt, in der der Mensch im Mittelpunkt steht, nicht Profitinteressen.

Berlin-based Canadian conductor Vanessa Chartrand-Rodrigue is a 2020 Opera Awards Foundation bursary recipient and scholarship holder from the Royal Philharmonic Society of London. From her rich background as a classical singer and viola da Gamba player, her conducting encompasses symphonic works, contemporary music, baroque music and opera.  She most recently worked as assistant conductor to Vladimir Jurowski at the London Royal Opera House’s in a production of Jenufa, and with the Berlin Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra on works by Mahler, Beethoven, Zemlinksy, Schubert and Mozart.

Vanessa recently  gloriously debuted in France with the Orchestre National d’Auvergne in a program of 20th century music with soloist Romain Leleu, performed at the Auditorium de Bordeaux. She also enchanted the public  in her rendition of Mendelssohn’s 4th Symphony with the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra. in 2021, she conducted the Kiev Symphony Orchestra in a beautiful program of Debussy, Stravinsky and Bartok. And she thrilled the members of the Chamber Orchestra of Cascais the following month when working with them on Hadyn’s Symphony No.74 and Mozart Oboe concerto K314.

Furthermore, Vanessa conducted the world premiere of New York composer Lisa Bielawa’s Mauer Broadcast for double choruses, ensemble and soloist for the Berlin wall celebration at the Berlin Brandenburger Tor.

Vanessa has collaborated as a conductor and singer with renowned ensembles including Ensemble UnitedBerlin, Zafrann Ensemble, Mosaik Ensemble, Chroma Ensemble, Phoenix16, DELTA Ensemble (France), Michaelis Consort, and performed at major contemporary music festivals such as MärzMusik, MIKROMUSIK Festival for Experimental music and sound art, ULTRASCHALL Festival, Documenta 14, Ruhrfestspielhaus Recklinghausen, and Duisburger Akzente.

Vanessa counts among her conducting mentors Vladimir Jurowski and Jessica Cottis. She has worked as well with Luigi Gaggero, Hervé Niquet, Jay Bernfeld, Skip Sempé,  and has coached with Alexander Schmalcz, Michael McMahon, Rainer Mühlbach, and Wolf-Michael Storz, Falk Struckmann, Xenia Meijer. 

She graduated with honours from McGill University in voice. Thereafter, she attended a Master’s degree in viola da Gamba at the Université de Montréal before moving to Germany to pursue her operatic studies with Ks. Jeanne Piland. She has sang the roles of Carmen, Giulio Cesare (Portugal) , Ciesca ( Deutsche Oper am Rhein), Cherubino (Barcelona Opera Studio), Hänsel, Dorabella, Medoro, Hermia, Nicklaus. She also sang the solo parts of Mahler ‘s Symphony no4, Mozart’s Requiem, Saint-Seans’ Oratorio, and Monteverdi’s Beatus Vir.

She is the Musical Director and founder of OpusXX Orchestra, a new Berlin based Ensemble focusing on the revival of works by women composers.

The CIVIC CITY series of conversations, which will also be broadcast live as a podcast and video stream, brings together artists*, urbanists*, thinkers*, and organizers in conversations to discuss, explore, and imagine new forms of living, working, and participating together in Berlin, both now and in the future.


What does participation look like in a city like Berlin? Is it constant voting in referenda or referendums, do citizens get the opportunity to participate in planning processes? How do we develop alternative designs amidst a flood of fragmentary information and impulses that fill our daily lives? In this daily onslaught, after the fake news has filtered out, where do we still find places where open discussion is possible? Is it possible to combine participation, family and work? How do people who are part of this society but do not have German citizenship participate?


In a series of five conversations, we want to create public spaces of mutual enrichment that allow moments of shared reflection and imagination. Moderated by Fetewei Tarekegn, a presenter, artist, and urban gardener who regularly invites guests on his show Minority Report to engage in critical conversations about their experiences as part of minority groups and who co-manages a community garden at the Dammweg Community Campus.

In the third episode, "Ownership/Voice/Representation" the podcast critically examines the representation of different groups in mainstream culture. It explores how cultures interact and intersect, the individuals and events that shape public opinion, and the involvement of diverse voices in public planning processes. The episode also sheds light on the representation of individuals without status or not belonging to the national population and the entry of new ideas and innovation into various sectors.


This series is a joint project of ACUD MACHT NEU, the Community Campus Dammweg (Berlin Mondiale), tak Theater Aufbau Kreuzberg and Aufbau Haus and is part of the initiative DRAUSSENSTADT, funded by the Senate Department for Culture and Europe and the Stiftung für Kulturelle Weiterbildung und Kulturberatung.
